• Image of Awesome Green & Black Designed Berimbau - Gunga/Berraboi - Afro-Brazilian Musical Bow

Handcrafted traditional Afro-Brazilian style berimbau crafted by master berimbau maker Pererê to sound awesome, look great, and feel balanced in the hand. This berimbau has a large gourd resonator - called a cabaca - which gives it a designation of a 'Medio' and/or a 'Gunga' or ‘Berraboi’ in the bataria of capoeira once it gets broken in.

This berimbau is easily tuned to your personal needs and has a variety of ways to adjust the sound. It has been colored by hand with vibrant fiber dyes, with many hours spent woodburning beautiful lively geometrically inspired designs onto its surface from top to bottom. It is constructed from a variety of natural materials finished in a durable clear lacquer which draws out the beauty of the natural materials used in its construction.

The bow is made of a resilient hardwood (not biriba wood - which is rapidly becoming endangered in Brazil do to over-harvesting practices). Pererê individually hand-harvests, dries, shapes, and properly mates each verga (bow) to a cabaca (gourd) resonator for maximum sound clarity and volume.

This wonderful berimbau is 57 inches tall when braced, the cabaca is 8 inches in diameter and it comes complete with playing stick (vaqueta), tempered steel music wire with cotton lashing cord, a round fretting stone (moeda), and handwoven caxixi basket rattle made of reed cane and guard shell - I personally make, shape, weave, carve, design, or forage for every part of the instrument, and every detail is carefully crafted.
